They did it. The pros at Crime Factory went ahead and lowered their standards just for me. Richard Dean Buckner, homicide cop turned private detective, is just trying to get to an all night Armenian diner when he comes along a high pimp beating a pregnant whore. So of course it’s time to beat his face in. Then people start shooting. Then a high speed chase. Then a car wreck outside of a police station. Then…finality. Sprinkle in some PCP and a need to protect an unborn child and you’ve got a winning formula. Hammer down.

The folks over at Near to the Knuckle, a gritty noir site, have accepted my story “Squeezing” for their anthology. Holy crap, that is awesome. Squeezing is a gentle slice-of-life bit that follows a nerd during an active shooting on a campus. Horrible, I know. But, my serialized stories about unicorns and puppies hasn’t found a home yet so I have to make the rent somehow.
The girl has gone missing. Again. But this time people are trying to
kill her. Trying to burn down everything she has touched or left
behind. The girl’s surrogate father feels responsible and to assuage
his guilt he hires Richard Dean Buckner, former Saint Ansgar homicide
detective turned private eye to ferret her out.
Buckner was doing fine as a bare-knuckles detective for the PD until
he was rendered “unserviceable” by a hit attempt. Early retirement
doesn’t sit well with that type of man, half predator and half savior.
He takes the case, and from two ex-boyfriends who ruined their lives
for the girl to her rapist dad, drug dealers she burned for thousands,
an uncomfortable meeting at the local Incest Survivors group to
whoever is setting fire to her life, Buckner is going to need all his
guts, instinct and .44 magnum to finish the job.
Because in Saint Ansgar, what doesn’t kill you only makes you wish it did.

The menu column titled ‘Excised Demons’ I put up as a collect-all for any of my stories that have been taken down off the Internet. Posted there now are four shorts which were previously published on now-defunct websites. Oh, Amanda and Sponsor were published at the Short Story Library. Amanda was included in a printed anthology. The link for that is live under the ‘Bullets Already Spent’ column at the very bottom. Evidence was put up in the Heroin Love Songs volume 7 collection and Wilhelm was at the short-lived but eclectic Craniotomic Magazine. Enjoy.
So, at the beginning of the year I wrote a (long) short story about a wingless fairy named Pixie who spends her days being drunk and slaughtering the zombie infestations that always pop up in her magical homeland. My wife, a multi-genre fiber artist, did my cover. I uploaded it to Amazon and sent it out into the world, for better or worse. Hammer down.
